Rathmines Team Celebrate their late winner | Felami’s fabulous Hat-trick Saves Rathmines | Match Report by Darragh McCann
Rathmines emerged victorious after a hard-fought 90 minutes to reach the final of the Invitational Cup. The first half kicked off with a strong start from a well-drilled IADT side, who pressed early and forced a mistake from the Rathmines defense, leading to the opening goal in the 10th minute.
IADT made it difficult for Rathmines to find their rhythm, slowing the game down and playing for set pieces—an approach that seemed to be working. However, in the 21st minute, Rathmines won a penalty after Felami Areola’s silky dribbling forced an IADT defender into a rash challenge inside the box. Areola coolly slotted the penalty beyond the goalkeeper’s reach to bring Rathmines level.
Rathmines fought hard until the halftime whistle, with centre-backs Elijah Odion and Donal O’Brien standing out as key performers.
The second half kicked off slowly, with IADT still attempting to employ some dark arts to find a second goal. However, it was Rathmines who struck next.
Man of the Match: Felami Areola Ayide
In the 65th minute, Felami Areola latched onto a through ball from Mohamed Rhuma and calmly slipped it past the keeper to give Rathmines the lead.
Rathmines fought gallantly in the final 20 minutes as IADT piled on the pressure, knocking on the door for an equalizer. But in the closing moments, Felami Areola Ayide put them to the sword, completing his hat-trick with a beautifully placed strike that went in off the inside of the post.
After the match, Rathmines manager Aidan Roche summed up the victory in his post-match talk, describing it as “showing real character to beat IADT.” He was spot on, as the team displayed both their class and the spirit they have built over the season, bringing it all together on the pitch.
Rathmines will now face ATU Galway next Thursday, March 6th, at Athlone Stadium.
